New material can withstand higher temperatures without scuffing, allowing engines to produce more power while enhancing durability

 

Hannover, Germany, Sep 25, 2012 ... Federal-Mogul Corporation (NASDAQ:FDML) has developed a new self-lubricating valve guide material that addresses the challenges of excessive and accelerated wear increasingly encountered on high specific power engines. The material, called PMF-10E, allows valvetrains to operate at higher temperatures - between 100°C (212°F) and 200°C (392°F) hotter than those using conventional lubrication - without increasing wear between the valve stem and guide.

The IROX polymer overlay's exceptional wear resistance supports CO2 reduction by enabling new engine management strategies, such as stop-start features. Combined with a new lead-free bronze substrate, the new bearings are capable of handling specific loads up to 80MPa in highly boosted engines and provide extended durability in even the most arduous applications. Developed initially for highly loaded main bearing and connecting rod big end applications in the truck sector, the new bearings can also be applied to combustion engines in agriculture, off-highway and mining.

Award-winning innovation heralds the next step in oil technology

 

Yorkshire, UK - A new family of energy efficient oils that can reduce fuel consumption and increase power will be launched by specialist developer and blender Millers Oils at the Automechanika show in Frankfurt. Branded Nanodrive because of the use of innovative nanotechnology, the lubricants improve fuel consumption and increase engine performance by reducing friction. The new range, which includes engine and transmission oils, uses microscopic nanoparticles that act like minute ball bearings between opposing metal surfaces. Independent back-to-back tests showed an engine using Nanodrive returned a fuel saving of up to 2.5 percent.
