Q & A with Thatcham?s Head of Research, Matthew Avery   Print
Thursday, 22nd November 2012

How did Thatcham first get involved with Euro NCAP?

Back in the late 1990s, insurers really began to suffer from high levels of whiplash injury claims - and they still are. Thatcham was tasked with helping to reduce this type of injury and, working with international colleagues, we designed test procedures to enable us to rate seats. We have been doing that since 2002. We were driving the seat safety agenda with vehicle manufacturers to such an extent that Euro NCAP asked us to become a member, representing British insurers, and helping them to develop a whiplash prevention test and to work toward the broader safety agenda. We've been formally testing seats for Euro NCAP since 2008.
